Early Identification and Support

Early identification and support can make a meaningful difference in a child’s communication, learning, and daily functioning. Our MindWorX team offers structured, evidence-based autism assessments to help families gain clarity and take the next steps with confidence.

What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and process information. Children with ASD may show differences in language development, behaviour, play skills, and sensory responses.

Because autism is a spectrum, every child presents differently. Some may have mild social communication challenges, while others exhibit broader developmental differences. Early signs often appear in the first two years of life, though the timing and presentation vary widely.

Does My Child Need an Autism Assessment?

You may consider an autism assessment if your child demonstrates several behaviours in the areas below. A formal evaluation can help determine whether these signs are related to ASD or other developmental factors.

Communication

  • Limited gestures such as pointing or waving
  • Inconsistent response to name
  • Loss of previously acquired language
  • No words by 18 months or no simple phrases by 24 months
  • Repetitive or unusual speech patterns

Behaviour

  • Repetitive movements (hand flapping, spinning, pacing)
  • Intense focus on specific topics or objects
  • Difficulty adapting to changes in routine
  • Frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts without clear cause
  • Strong preference for predictable, repetitive activities

Social Interaction and Play

  • Limited eye contact
  • Reduced interest in peers or shared activities
  • Preference for playing alone
  • Unusual use of toys, such as lining objects up
  • Limited pretend or imaginative play

Sensory Processing

  • Over- or under-sensitivity to noise, textures, touch, or lights
  • Visual behaviours such as looking at objects from the side
  • Frequent mouthing or chewing of objects
  • Unusual interest in spinning or moving items

If you recognise several of these signs, an assessment can help you better understand your child’s developmental profile and the type of support they may benefit from.

F.A.Q

At what age can autism be diagnosed?

Autism can be reliably diagnosed from around 18 to 24 months, although signs may appear earlier. Assessments can also be conducted for older children, adolescents, and adults.

How is a child autism assessment different from an adult one?

Child assessments are more observational and play-based and often include school and parent input. Adult assessments rely more on interviews, developmental history, and structured questionnaires.

Who should conduct an ASD assessment?

A Clinical Psychologist typically leads the assessment. Depending on your child’s needs, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, or counsellors may also participate.

Can autism improve with therapy?

Autism is lifelong, but early intervention can significantly improve communication, learning, social skills, and daily functioning.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required. Families can contact OT&P MindWorX directly to arrange an assessment.
