Helping your child grow with confidence from the very beginning

What Is an Early Years Developmental Assessment?

An Early Years Developmental Assessment (EYDA) is a comprehensive, play-based evaluation that helps understand how your child is progressing across key developmental milestones — including language, motor skills, emotional regulation, social interaction, and play. The goal is to identify both areas of strength and any aspects where your child may benefit from additional support.

The first six years of life are a critical period for a child’s development, marked by rapid growth in language, motor skills, emotional regulation, social interaction, and play. Early identification of any developmental delays during this time is essential. A timely assessment provides clarity and enables early intervention, which can significantly improve long-term outcomes in learning, behaviour, and overall well-being.

Does My Child Need an Early Developmental Assessment?

You may consider an assessment if your child (under 6 years old) is showing signs such as:

What’s Included in the Assessment Process

Our developmental assessment process offers a structured and holistic view of your child’s strengths and needs. Each step combines professional insights with evidence-based tools to ensure a thorough and personalised evaluation. To ensure a thorough and supportive experience, the initial consultation is completed in two parts, with a combined minimum consultation time of 90 minutes.

1. Parent Intake Session

We begin with a private consultation (without your child) to understand their developmental history, your specific concerns, and goals for support.

2. Child Observation & Testing

Your child will be observed in a friendly, play-based setting. During this session, our therapists assess areas such as motor skills, communication, attention, social interaction, and emotional regulation using a range of standardised tools. Depending on your child’s needs and age, we may use developmental checklists, the Vineland-3, ABAS-3, and structured parent questionnaires to assess daily functioning.

For sensory and behavioural insights, tools like the BASC-3 may be applied. To evaluate language and communication, we use age-appropriate speech and language scales tailored to your child’s stage of development.

If cognitive assessment is required, we may administer recognised IQ tests such as the WPPSI-IV for preschoolers, WISC-V for school-aged children, or the WAIS-V for adolescents and adults. In cases where academic achievement needs to be assessed, tools like the WIAT-4 or KTEA-3 may be used.

3. Team Review (if applicable)

With your consent, if your child is seen by multiple professionals, we conduct a multidisciplinary team discussion to ensure all perspectives are considered and aligned. This collaborative review allows us to form a comprehensive understanding of your child’s development and provide consistent, coordinated recommendations.

4. Report & Feedback Session

After the assessment, you’ll receive a comprehensive written report outlining key observations, developmental insights, and (if applicable) standardised scores. The report includes practical, tailored recommendations to support your child at home, in therapy, and at school.

We then invite you to a dedicated feedback session, where we walk you through the findings in clear, accessible terms and answer any questions you may have. With your consent, we can also coordinate directly with your child’s teachers, learning support staff, or SEN coordinators to ensure consistent understanding and implementation of strategies across settings.

Our goal is to empower families and schools with the tools they need to support your child’s growth with clarity and confidence.

Why Getting an Early Developmental Assessment Matters

Early identification of developmental delays allows families to take proactive steps — and gives children the best possible chance to grow, learn, and thrive.

An early years assessment provides:

A thorough understanding of your child’s developmental profile

Access to early intervention services and therapies

Support for school readiness and classroom participation

Personalised strategies to support learning, play, and daily life

Peace of mind for parents — knowing you’re on the right path

Most importantly, it reassures families that you don’t have to face these concerns alone. At OT&P MindWorX, our team is here to support your child’s wellbeing — with compassion, clarity, and expert care every step of the way.

F.A.Q About Early Developmental Assessment

Can a developmental delay correct itself without intervention?

Some children may catch up on their own, but many benefit significantly from early support. A developmental assessment helps determine whether your child is simply developing at their own pace or could benefit from targeted therapies such as speech or occupational therapy.

Is a referral required for a developmental assessment in Hong Kong?

No referral is needed. Parents can contact OT&P directly to book an assessment. However, recommendations from your paediatrician, teacher, or another therapist can be useful in guiding the process.

Will my child be diagnosed with a condition during the assessment?

Not necessarily. The goal of the assessment is to understand your child’s development. If a clinical diagnosis (e.g. developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder) is appropriate, this will be discussed with you in a clear and supportive way — but not all assessments result in a diagnosis.

How much does an early years developmental assessment cost in Hong Kong?

Costs vary depending on the clinic and whether a single or multidisciplinary assessment is needed. At leading centres like OT&P, a full early childhood developmental assessment typically includes therapist time, a written report, and a parent feedback session. Contact the clinic directly for current pricing.

How do you work with my child’s school to support early development?

With your consent, we collaborate directly with your child’s school to support early intervention and ensure consistency across settings. This may include sharing assessment findings with teachers or the school’s SEN coordinator, participating in school meetings, and recommending classroom strategies tailored to your child’s needs.
By working together with educators, we help create a supportive learning environment that reinforces developmental goals and promotes your child’s progress both at home and in the classroom.
