What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy focuses on helping individuals of all ages communicate clearly, confidently, and effectively. It involves assessment and treatment of speech sound production, language comprehension and expression, voice quality, fluency, and social communication skills.

For children, therapy often includes play-based, interactive, and personalised activities that make learning enjoyable and meaningful. For adults, sessions may focus on improving speech clarity, recovering communication abilities following stroke or injury, managing voice disorders, or supporting confidence in professional and social communication.

Whether for a child developing language milestones or an adult regaining or refining their communication skills, speech therapy provides targeted support to enhance everyday interactions.

Does My Child Need a Speech Therapy Assessment?

Signs that may indicate your child needs an assessment:

  • Delayed speech milestones, such as slower progress compared to peers, difficulties forming sentences for age expectations, late onset of first words or phrases, and reliance on gestures instead of spoken words.
  • Difficulty pronouncing words or forming sentences.
  • Stuttering or other fluency issues.
  • Limited vocabulary for age.
  • Unclear speech that is difficult for others to understand.
  • Frustration or behavioural issues linked to communication struggles.
  • Challenges in social communication, maintaining conversation, or forming friendships
  • Feeding and swallowing disorders, such as having problems chewing, trouble breathing while eating and drinking, and coughing during meals.

Why Getting Speech Therapy Matters?

speech therapy-4

Early intervention can make a remarkable difference in a child’s life. The golden window for children is between 0-5 years old. When speech and language challenges are addressed early, children not only improve their ability to communicate but also experience stronger academic and social outcomes.

For adults, speech therapy plays an equally vital role — it helps preserve dignity, restore independence, and recover functions that may have been affected by illness, injury, or neurological changes. Regaining the ability to express oneself clearly, swallow and eat safely enhances confidence, participation in daily activities, and overall quality of life.

Speech therapy doesn’t just transform communication—it transforms relationships. Effective therapy supports not only the individual but also strengthens communication and understanding within the family unit, creating more meaningful and connected relationships.

FAQs about Speech Therapy in Children

At what age should I get my child assessed?

Early intervention yields the best outcomes, with the optimal window typically between ages 2 and 5. However, if developmental delays are observed at any stage, an assessment is strongly recommended.

How long does speech therapy take?

A typical session takes 45 –60  minutes. The actual duration depends on each individual’s needs and goals. Please feel free to reach out to OT&P MindWorX for further enquiries.

Can parents participate in therapy?

Yes. Parent involvement is highly encouraged, which helps reinforce techniques and speeds up progress.

Is bilingualism the cause of my child’s speech delay?

Not usually. Mixing languages is normal for bilingual children. If your child’s overall development is on track, bilingualism alone is unlikely to cause a speech delay.

FAQs about Speech Therapy in Adults

How much does a speech therapy session cost?

Session fees vary widely depending on location, provider type, therapist credentials, session length, and whether it’s a one-on-one or group session. For more details, please contact OT&P MindWorX.

Is a referral needed for speech therapy?

In most cases, a referral is not required to start speech therapy.

Is speech therapy covered in insurance?

Coverage varies by plan and provider. Always check your policy details and confirm with your insurer before starting sessions.

How long does adult speech therapy take to show results?

The length of therapy depends on the cause, severity, and individual goals. Some adults see improvement within a few weeks, whereas others require ongoing sessions for more complex conditions.
