OT&P now offers the Attomarker Antibody Spectrum Test to support the assessment and management of patients with Long COVID in Hong Kong.
This is a precision blood test that measures both the levels and quality of antibodies against multiple SARS CoV 2 variants, including the original Wuhan strain as well as Delta and Omicron variants. As COVID 19 has evolved, so too have immune responses, and understanding these differences can be clinically useful when reviewing patients with persistent post viral symptoms.
Following discussions with Professor Shaw of Attomarker, we have incorporated this test into our approach to help fine tune management plans for selected Long COVID patients.
What Does the Attomarker Test Measure?
The test profiles an individual’s antibody “spectrum” across a wide range of variants. Based on this analysis, patients may be classified into immune response patterns, such as:
-
Hypoimmune response
-
Hyperimmune response
This helps clinicians identify potential gaps or excesses in the antibody profile that may correlate with ongoing symptoms or immune dysregulation.
By comparing a patient’s immune profile with the timeline of circulating variants in Hong Kong and globally, we can better understand how their immune system has responded to specific waves of infection. In some cases, this may suggest an exaggerated immune response to certain variants or a relatively weaker response to others.
Why This Matters for Long COVID
Long COVID remains a significant clinical issue in Hong Kong and worldwide, particularly in individuals who have experienced multiple infections during successive waves.
Persistent symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, palpitations and exercise intolerance may in some cases be linked to ongoing immune activation or dysregulation. While no single test can diagnose Long COVID, immune profiling may provide additional insight in selected patients and support a more personalised management strategy.
As always, this test is used as part of a broader clinical assessment rather than in isolation.
Professor Shaw of Attomarker provides a detailed explanation of the science behind the COVID Antibody Spectrum Test in a video available on the Attomarker website.
