Most of us are familiar with inflammation as the redness and swelling that appears after a cut or an infection. That kind of inflammation is healthy and helpful.
But there is another kind of inflammation, one that simmers silently inside the body for years without any obvious symptoms. This quieter process may be one of the most important threats to our long-term health.
C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the most accessible ways to detect this hidden inflammation. Produced by the liver in response to inflammatory signals in the body, CRP rises when something is stirring the immune system.
A standard blood test can measure CRP, while a more sensitive version called high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) can detect much lower levels that would otherwise go unnoticed.
What Does a Raised CRP Actually Mean?
A single raised CRP result is not a diagnosis. Infections, injuries, and autoimmune conditions can all temporarily raise CRP.
