Creatinine is a byproduct of normal muscle metabolism that is primarily filtered out of the body by the kidneys through urine. Creatinine levels are one of the key markers used to assess kidney function. When creatinine is higher than expected, it may indicate impaired kidney function or other underlying health concerns. So what can you do if your creatinine is high, and what is the normal range? This article answers these questions and offers practical health advice to help you manage your creatinine levels and look after your kidneys.
What Is Creatinine and What Role Does It Play in Our Body?
Creatinine is a metabolic waste product generated by the normal breakdown of muscle tissue and the digestion of dietary protein. When your muscles are active, creatine is broken down into creatinine, which then travels through the bloodstream to the kidneys and is excreted in the urine. Because the body produces creatinine at a relatively steady rate, its level in the blood serves as a reliable indicator of how well your kidneys are filtering waste, making it an essential marker in kidney function assessments.
Normal Blood Creatinine Ranges
Creatinine levels vary depending on age, sex and muscle mass. The following are general reference ranges:

Common Causes of High Creatinine
Elevated creatinine (hypercreatininaemia) can result from several factors:
1. Impaired kidney function
Kidney infections, rhabdomyolysis (abnormal muscle breakdown) and urinary tract obstruction can all lead to a rise in creatinine levels.
2. High-protein diet
Consuming large amounts of meat may cause a temporary spike in serum creatinine.
3. Medication effects
Certain medications, such as cimetidine (brand name Tagamet) and the antibiotic co-trimoxazole (brand name Bactrim), can sometimes cause an abnormal rise in creatinine levels.
Drugs that damage the kidneys directly or indirectly, including aminoglycoside antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and contrast agents, may also push creatinine levels up.
4. Other medical conditions
Underlying conditions such as dehydration, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart failure can indirectly affect kidney function and lead to elevated creatinine.
What symptoms are associated with high creatinine on a blood test?
The symptoms of impaired kidney function (renal insufficiency) vary from person to person and do not always correlate directly with blood creatinine levels. There are usually no symptoms in mild kidney impairment. Common symptoms found in severe kidney impairment include:

Loss of appetite

Difficulty sleeping

Increased or decreased urine output

Swelling (oedema)

Shortness of breath

Difficulty concentrating or confusion

Nausea and vomiting

Neuropathy

Dry skin

How to improve high creatinine levels
1. Adjust your diet

Reduce animal protein: Cut back on red meat, organ meats and dairy products, choose plant-based protein, such as legumes, nuts and seeds.

Avoid routine potassium restriction: Do not restrict potassium intake unless a blood test confirms a high level of potassium. Choose low-potassium foods: Opt for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains.
- Limit sodium: Low sodium intake (less than 2 grams a day) supports blood pressure control and fluid balance.
2. Adopt healthier lifestyle habits

Exercise regularly: Choose low-to-moderate-intensity activities such as walking or yoga.

Avoid creatine supplements: This can elevate your creatinine level, which may be misinterpreted as a kidney problem. This is especially important if your kidney function is already compromised.
- Limit alcohol intake.
3. Have regular check-ups
Routine kidney function tests and urine tests can help detect abnormal creatinine levels and kidney impairment early, and allow any underlying condition to be managed promptly.
4. Manage underlying conditions
If elevated creatinine is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure or another condition, actively managing that condition can help bring creatinine levels under control.
5. Be aware of medication side effects
Understand the safety profile of your medications, particularly if you are taking several drugs for different conditions. Speak with your GP to review your medications regularly.
6. Consult your doctor
If your creatinine levels remain persistently elevated, seek medical advice early so that a personalised treatment plan can be put in place.
