What is Minoxidil? 

Minoxidil is a medication primarily known for its role in treating hair loss. It is commonly used as a topical treatment to stimulate hair growth and slow balding. It is available over-the-counter for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as male or female pattern baldness. 

The active ingredient in Minoxidil is minoxidil sulfate. This agent works by dilating blood vessels in the scalp, which may improve hair follicle function and stimulate hair growth. 

Global Name

The generic name for Minoxidil is minoxidil, and it is sold under various brand names, including Rogaine and Regaine. 


What is Minoxidil used for? 

Minoxidil is used primarily for: 
  • Treating male pattern baldness 
  • Treating female pattern baldness 
  • Helping in the regrowth of hair in patients who are experiencing gradually thinning hair 

How do you use Minoxidil?  


Minoxidil is available in liquid and foam forms that are applied topically to the scalp.

Dosage information:

  • Apply 1 ml of the solution or half a capful of foam to the affected area of the scalp twice a day. 
  • It is important to use Minoxidil regularly to get the most benefit. 


  • Adults: Suitable for adults experiencing pattern baldness. 
  • Elderlies: Can be used, but consult a healthcare provider as age-related conditions might affect treatment. 

Is there anyone who can’t take Minoxidil? 

  • Children: Not recommended. 
  • Adults: Those with scalp conditions or cardiovascular issues should consult with a healthcare provider. 
  • Elderlies: Use with caution; consult healthcare provider
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Not advised due to lack of sufficient safety data. 

Allergies: Individuals with known sensitivity to minoxidil or any other components of the formulation should not use this product. 


Warnings and Precautions:

  • Only apply to a healthy scalp. Avoid using on irritated, wounded or sunburned areas of the scalp. 
  • Wash hands thoroughly after application. 
  • Avoid inhalation or ingestion of the foam or liquid.

  • Minoxidil should not be used with other topical medications on the scalp without medical advice. 
  • Be cautious of using blood pressure medications concurrently, as adverse interactions may occur.

Common side effects include itching or irritation at the application site, unwanted facial hair growth, and exacerbation of hair loss initially.

Storage information: 
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze the liquid form of Minoxidil. 

Handling instructions: 
Use only on the scalp. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with cool water. 


Where is Minoxidil available in Hong Kong?

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that can be sold without a prescription. It is found in all chain drug stores, including Mannings and Watsons. 



How long does it take to see results from Minoxidil?

It usually takes about four months to a year to see visible results from Minoxidil, with continuous usage.

Can I use Minoxidil on other parts of my body? 

No, Minoxidil is only approved for scalp treatment and should not be used on other parts of the body.

What happens if I stop using Minoxidil?

If treatment is discontinued, the normal hair loss process will resume, and any hair regrown or maintained through treatment may be lost.

Can women use Minoxidil?

Yes, Minoxidil 2% solution is specifically designed for use by women. There is also a 5% concentration available for both men and women, but it should be used under medical supervision.
