What is Gaviscon? 

Gaviscon is an over-the-counter medication brand primarily used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and indigestion. It contains a combination of alginic acid and antacids such as sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. 

The drug works by forming a protective barrier on top of the stomach contents to prevent stomach acids from rising to the esophagus, which can  cause  the burning sensation known as “heartburn”. The antacid component also neutralizes the excess stomach acids to provide additional relief.

Availability:

Gaviscon is available in several forms, including chewable tablets, liquid sachets, and liquid suspension. 

Dosage information: 

• Adults and children over 12 years: 2-4 tablets chewed thoroughly, or 10-20 mL liquid taken after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor.
