Overview

What is Gaviscon?

Gaviscon is an over-the-counter medication brand primarily used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and indigestion. It contains a combination of alginic acid and antacids such as sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate.

The drug works by forming a protective barrier on top of the stomach contents to prevent stomach acids from rising to the esophagus, which can  cause  the burning sensation known as heartburn. The antacid component also neutralizes the excess stomach acids to provide additional relief.

Proper Usage:
  • Take Gaviscon as directed on the label or by your pharmacist. It is usually taken after meals and at bedtime.
  • Chew the tablets thoroughly before swallowing for maximum effectiveness.
  • If you are using the liquid form, shake the bottle well before each use to ensure proper mixing of the medication.
  • Use the dosing cup provided with the liquid form to ensure you are taking the correct amount.

Timing is Key:

  • Timing is important with Gaviscon. Do not take it at the same time as other medications, as it can interfere with their absorption. A general rule is to wait at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other medications.

Dietary Considerations:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that trigger heartburn, such as spicy foods, acidic fruits, caffeine, and alcohol.
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large meals to help reduce the pressure on your stomach.

Avoid Overuse:

  • Do not use Gaviscon for longer than two weeks without seeking medical advice. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor as it may indicate a more serious condition.

Monitoring:

  • Be aware of any allergic reactions, such as rashes, itching, or difficulty breathing. If these occur, stop taking Gaviscon and seek medical attention immediately.
  • If you experience any new or worsening symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider.
