How Can I Choose the Best Probiotic?

Choose probiotics with at least 1 billion CFU.

Read the packaging label before purchasing any probiotic product. A good probiotic product should contain live and active bacterial cultures. The general recommendation is to choose probiotic products with dosages of 1 billion to 100 billion colony forming units (CFU) per day containing the genus Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, or Saccharomyces boulardii, which are the more researched probiotics.

Probiotic foods should be your first choice as compared to probiotic supplements. Probiotic foods include fermented foods such as yoghurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso. These foods can provide a nourishing environment in which good bacteria can thrive and release an important byproduct, short-chain fatty acids.[1]
