M(SocSc) Marriage & Family Therapy
Accredited Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist
Registered Member BACP
On completion of her Psychology degree in the UK, Sonia furthered her studies in the compelling area of human relationships. She gained her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Hong Kong, and her work since then has focused on the central importance of relationships to the well-being of individuals, couples and families.
Being in a relationship can be hard. As social beings, we are hard-wired to seek acceptance and belonging. And yet often our real-life experience can be very different, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness. This is particularly distressing if the people we love are the people from whom we feel the most disconnected and misunderstood.
Sonia focuses her work on supporting clients and partners to identify unhelpful interpersonal patterns of interaction, helping them to free themselves from counterproductive behaviours, thereby restoring and repairing connection.
She has an integrative, experiential approach, drawing on her training in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (an evidence-based approach to treating relationship distress), as well as mindfulness and brain-based disciplines. Her primary aim is always to create a space where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts and feelings. The sense of being truly heard and understood is the first step to healing and the basis on which problems can be shared, new opportunities explored and empowering, life-enhancing strategies formed.
Sonia has worked in HK for ten years, helping clients with a range of presentations including relationship issues, anxiety, depression, trauma and lifecycle transitions.
