Experience

With over 30 years of professional practice, Michelle is Annerley’s most experienced midwife.

Michelle has provided care for thousands of women and babies over the years, as well as having two babies of her own along the way.  She is well known for her calm and reassuring presence, deep clinical knowledge, practical guidance, and support—particularly with breastfeeding and early postnatal care. Her care philosophy focuses on identifying individual needs and creating a tailored approach with shared decision-making.

Born and raised in Liverpool, England, Michelle began her professional career as a nurse in Europe’s largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she gained a specialist neonatal qualification. Whilst caring for extremely premature babies, she held senior responsibility for critical clinical care and decision-making in a high-stress environment.

After completing further training as a midwife in 2004, she worked in various UK hospitals as both a nurse and midwife. Expanding on her clinical knowledge and practical skills, she worked in low-risk birthing units, high-risk delivery suites, maternity triage, neonatal units, and antenatal and postnatal wards.

This extensive UK experience provided an excellent foundation for midwifery in Hong Kong. Working as a midwife at the Matilda International Hospital from 2012, she gained first-hand experience of the local maternity provision, providing care for local and international clients whilst working alongside obstetricians, paediatricians, and anaesthetists.

In 2016, she continued to expand her career and experience by switching from hospital work to community practice with Annerley Midwives Clinic. Here, her clinical focus shifted towards providing close, continuous support throughout pregnancy and after birth. Travelling all over Hong Kong with her ‘Mary Poppins bag,' Michelle uses her skill set to check on the well-being of new mothers and babies at home for many weeks (or even months) after birth. As an IBC Lactation Consultant, she is often solving complex breastfeeding challenges and is widely recommended for her gentle, evidence-based, and practical approach.

Michelle teaches antenatal classes and facilitates postnatal support groups and workshops. She also volunteers her clinical services to Pathfinders, a local charity which helps migrant mothers in need of care.

In addition, she has authored multiple guidelines and published clinical articles, as well as providing expert commentary for the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Her complementary clinical skills include obstetric ultrasound, Reiki, and acupuncture.

Outside of clinical practice, Michelle enjoys a creative and active lifestyle. Her hobbies include hiking, creating art and music. She particularly enjoys singing and performing with various groups.
