Overview

LEQVIO, with the generic name inclisiran, is a novel cholesterol-lowering medication. Unlike traditional statins, LEQVIO works by silencing a specific gene in the liver, improving the regulation of the Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), or the bad cholesterol.

LEQVIO is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy, synthesised through advanced biotechnological processes targeting the PCSK9 gene, which plays a crucial role in regulating cholesterol.

Usage

What is LEQVIO used for?

LEQVIO is used to treat: 

  • Hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels) 
  • Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (genetically related) 
  • Mixed Dyslipidemia 
    It serves as an adjunct to diet and maximally tolerated statin therapy. 

How do you use LEQVIO? 

Dosage Information 

  • Administered as a subcutaneous injection. 
  • Initial doses at Day 1 and Day 90, followed by a maintenance dose every 6 months. 

Suitability 

  • Suitable for adults with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. 
  • Not recommended for children or adolescents. 

Contraindications 

  • Individuals with active liver disease or severe renal impairment. 
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding women. 

Allergy Information 

  • Patients with a known allergy to Inclisiran or excipients in LEQVIO. 

Warnings and Precautions 

  • Monitor liver enzymes and renal function. 
  • No food restrictions related to the timing of the injection. 

Interactions and Contraindications

  • Avoid in patients with a history of a life-threatening reaction to similar drugs. 

Side Effects
