Who Is at Risk for Japanese Encephalitis?

People who are travelling to areas where Japanese encephalitis is present.

The introduction of routine childhood vaccination programs in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan has mostly eliminated the risk of Japanese encephalitis in vaccinated patients despite the ongoing infection in endemic birds and animals.

People who travel to parts of Asia and the Western pacific can get infected if bitten by an infected mosquito. For most travellers, the risk of acquiring Japanese encephalitis is very low. People with the most significant risk of becoming infected are those staying for more than a month in rural areas in endemic countries.
