What Is Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a diagnostic technique to image the inside of the body.

An ultrasound scan, also known as a sonogram, is a non-invasive diagnostic technique to image the inside of the body. Ultrasound probes (transducers) convert electrical current into sound waves sent into the body's tissues. 

Most ultrasound probes are on the skin. However, probes may be placed inside the body via the blood vessels, vagina, or gastrointestinal tract to optimise the image quality. 

Ultrasounds may also be used during surgery to monitor the operating area.
