What Is HPV?

HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection caused by a group of viruses.

A person can become infected with HPV through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the virus. You do not need to have penetrative sex to catch HPV. You can also get it from skin-to-skin contact of the genital area.

A person who has an HPV infection may or may not show signs or symptoms.
