What Is Chorionic Villous Sampling (CVS)?

CVS holds information on the baby's genetic makeup

Chronic villous sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test that involves taking a sample of placental tissue, called chorionic villi. The chorionic villi holds information on the baby’s genetic makeup.

Why and when is CVS done?

The sample tissue taken in CVS is used to detect whether a baby has a chromosomal or genetic condition, such as Down’s syndrome or cystic fibrosis respectively.

You might consider CVS if:

  • Other prenatal screening tests revealed something abnormal
  • A previous pregnancy detected a chromosomal condition
  • You or your partner have a family history of specific genetic condition
  • Maternal age ≥ 35 (usually screening test will be done prior to deciding on CVS)

CVS is typically performed between 11 - 13 weeks of gestation, and as early as 10 weeks in some cases.
