What Is a Fetal Structural Scan?

Fetal structural scans can detect any fetal abnormalities as well as assess if your baby is growing in a healthy environment

Using ultrasound technology, fetal structural scans are conducted by your doctor to observe the development of your baby throughout pregnancy.

What do fetal structural scans tell us?

Besides confirming the fetal heartbeat and assessing the healthy environment that the baby is growing in, fetal structural scans can also detect any fetal abnormalities.

Most babies are healthy. In some cases, potential defects in the fetus can be detected through fetal structural scans. Being aware of any abnormalities before birth can help in better-preparing parents and your healthcare provider(s) for the specific needs of the baby once born. If major congenital defects are detected, your healthcare provider(s) will discuss the potential options for management, including termination of pregnancy, once prenatal diagnosis can be confirmed.
