What Are the Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis?

Symptoms are usually mild.

Most infections of Japanese encephalitis occur without apparent symptoms or with mild symptoms such as fever and headache.

Around 1 per 250 people infected with Japanese encephalitis develop more severe symptoms as the infection spreads to the brain. This usually occurs 5 to 15 days after the person is infected.

Those with a severe infection might experience convulsions, tremors, disorientation, coma, neck stiffness and paralysis. In infected children, common symptoms include seizures.
