What Are The Side Effects Of ADHD Medications?

Common side effects and how to minimise the side effect for children.

Common side effects of stimulants include loss of appetite, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, mood lability, tics and in rare cases an increased irritability. Stimulants also lead to a potential for misuse and abuse. These side effects are usually mild and transient, and can improve with a change in dosage or dosing schedule. Drug holidays, where a child stops medications over the weekends or extended periods, may be considered at times to minimise the side effect profile. Those with an existing or congenital heart condition should also consult a doctor before starting stimulants. Reported side effects of Atomoxetine (Strattera) include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, deranged liver function, and in very rare cases, an increase in suicidal thoughts.
