What Are the Symptoms of Mumps?

The main symptom is the large swelling of the cheeks.

The primary symptom of the mumps is the large swelling of the cheeks (one or both) which causes pain while chewing or swallowing.

Other symptoms soon follow, such as[1]:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
However, men and women do experience slightly different aches. 30% of unvaccinated patients get orchitis which is the swelling of one or both testicles. 7% of unvaccinated patients get oophoritis which is an inflammation of the ovaries.

Other complications include:
  • Inflammation of the breasts (30% of unvaccinated patients)
  • Temporary deafness (4% of unvaccinated patients)[2].
