Lipid metabolism can be divided into two primary processes: lipogenesis, which is the synthesis of fatty acids and triglycerides, and lipolysis, the breakdown of these fats for energy. Triglycerides, the body's main form of stored fat, are essential for energy balance and are a significant energy source during fasting or prolonged exercise. 

 

The liver plays a central role in lipid metabolism, processing dietary fats and regulating cholesterol levels. Although often viewed negatively, cholesterol is vital for producing hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids necessary for digestion. However, an imbalance in lipid levels, exceptionally high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, can increase the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. 

 

Several factors can influence lipid metabolism, including diet, physical activity, genetics, and hormonal balance. A diet rich in saturated fats, trans fats, and refined carbohydrates can negatively impact lipid profiles, leading to elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Conversely, incorporating healthy fats from sources such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil can promote better lipid profiles and overall health.

Regular physical activity is also crucial for maintaining healthy lipid levels. Exercise enhances the body's ability to metabolise fats, improves insulin sensitivity, and supports weight management—all essential components for optimal lipid metabolism. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week and strength training exercises on two or more days. 

 

In addition, managing stress levels and getting sufficient sleep can positively influence lipid metabolism. Chronic stress and sleep deprivation have been linked to hormonal imbalances that may disrupt lipid regulation.
