How Does a DEXA Scan Work?

The DEXA machine utilises a low-dose of x-ray to compute bone density measurements.

The DEXA machine sends a thin, invisible beam of low-dose x-ray with two distinct energy peaks through the bones. One peak is absorbed by the soft tissue, and the other peak by bone.

Calculating the patient's bone mineral density involves subtracting the soft tissue amount from the total.

The DEXA machines can also compute and display the bone density measurements on a computer monitor.
