What is Fluimucil?

Fluimucil is a medication primarily used as a mucolytic agent to break down and liquefy mucus, making it easier to clear from the respiratory tract. The active ingredient in Fluimucil is acetylcysteine, which not only helps in thinning mucus but also has antioxidant properties. 

The drug is commonly available in various forms, including effervescent tablets, sachets of granules, and solution for inhalation or injection.

Generic name:  Acetylcysteine (also N-acetylcysteine)
Brand names: Mucomyst, Acetadote and Parvolex among others. 


What is Fluimucil used for? 

Fluimucil is used to treat conditions such as: 

  • Chronic bronchitis 
  • Acute bronchitis 
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 
  • Pneumonia 
  • Cystic fibrosis 
  • Other conditions where there is a need to reduce mucus build-up or increase mucus clearance from the airway 

How do you use Fluimucil? 


Fluimucil is available in effervescent tablets, sachets, and solution form. 

Dosage information: 

  • Adults: One 200 mg tablet or sachet three times daily, or as directed by a physician. 
  • Children: The dosage will vary depending on the child's age and weight, and should be determined by a pediatrician. 


  • Children: Suitable, with pediatrician's guidance on dosing. 
  • Adults: Suitable across various adult age groups. 
  • Elderlies: Suitable, with caution regarding dosage. 
  • Pregnancy: Should be used only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. 
  • Lactation: Consult with a healthcare provider before use. 


Those with a known allergy to acetylcysteine or any other ingredient should not use Fluimucil. 

Warnings and precautions : 

Caution in patients with asthma and those at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding. 

Interactions and contraindications: 

Avoid use with activated charcoal and caution with nitroglycerin due to potential interactions. Not recommended for patients with an active peptic ulcer. 

Side Effects

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, rash, and fever. Inhalation may cause bronchospasm or stomatitis.
