Overview

What is Buscopan?

Buscopan, also known as hyoscine butylbromide and scopolamine butylbromide, is an antispasmodic medication made from the purified extract of the plant Duboisia. It primarily contains the chemical N-butylscopolammonium bromide as its active ingredient.

N-butylscopolammonium bromide (Hyoscine/scopolamine butylbromide), the active compound in Buscopan, is a quaternary ammonium compound derivative of scopolamine. It is synthesized in a multi-step chemical process that results in a water-soluble form that's less likely to cross the blood-brain barrier, minimizing central nervous system side effects.
