Can Severe Morning Sickness Hurt the Baby?

Unless persistent, morning sickness is not dangerous to the baby’s health at all.

It is important to know that while morning sickness is unpleasant and can disturb a mother’s day-to-day life, it is not at all dangerous to the baby’s health.

However, persistent morning sickness can develop into a severe form called hyperemesis gravidarum. A pregnant woman with hyperemesis gravidarum is at higher risk of dehydration and malnourishment due to increased vomiting.

UTIs (urinary tract infections) can also cause nausea and vomiting. You should contact a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Dark-coloured urine or no urination for more than eight hours
  • Severe dizziness or weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood in urine

The above symptoms are signs of dehydration or a UTI.
