What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat some skin lesions, such as warts and verrucas and small skin tags as an example.

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment using liquid nitrogen. The term “cryotherapy” comes from the greek word “cryo” meaning cold. Liquid nitrogen is kept in containers at an extremely cold temperature, and can be used to freeze living tissue for treatment purposes.

What is cryotherapy used for?

Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat some skin lesions, such as warts and verrucas and small skin tags as an example.

Is it painful?

Cryotherapy generally isn’t painful, but the very cold temperature will feel uncomfortable against the skin. Treatments usually last less than 1 minute, so the discomfort will not be for a long time.

How does it work?

Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy works by freezing the tissues, which will gradually discolour, a scab or blister will form and then fall off, leaving normal healthy skin to regrow below.

Usually cryotherapy is successful, but sometimes for larger or deeper lesions like verrucas on the bottom of the foot, multiple treatment sessions may be required.
