COVID-19 Update (21 February, 2020)

Our understanding of this new disease continues at an unprecedented rate. Amongst the important research published this week is further evidence that the illness poses a low risk to children. A study in the Lancet also suggested no increased risk in later pregnancy and none of the babies in this study were infected. 80% of all cases are mild. Most deaths are occurring in older people with other illnesses. We have again produced a summary of the latest developments in our understanding of both the disease and the evolution of the epidemic.

As of today 0.001% of the population of Hong Kong have been infected by COVID-19 but 100% of us have been impacted in some way by change and uncertainty. Whether by the schools closing, working from home or simply the worry about the illness or even shortages of masks. We have put together some practical resources including an article on strategies for maintaining structure for children during the period of school closure. In addition to information written by our mental health professionals with resources on dealing with uncertainty and navigating the anxiety epidemic.

Education and information are key factors in the management of infectious disease. We continue to believe that given adequate, balanced, reliable information that most people will be less worried about the current situation. We would continue to encourage you to critically analyse all medical information (including ours) and ask if it is rational and logical.

Our COVID-19 health information resources are now available in Chinese and French.
