Wellness & Functional Medicine

Optimise your life for restoration and wellness by addressing the root causes of health problems.

What is Functional Medicine?

Every individual is unique—things that work for one person may not be effective for your own needs. Functional Medicine solves this by expanding the traditional focus on disease and symptomatology and exploring all factors that impact your well-being. It is an integrative, science-based healthcare methodology that emphasises restoration and prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise tailored to each individual.

At OT&P, our functional medicine practitioners are equipped to deal with complex conditions in children and adults. By understanding the complex interactions that form a patient's unique health characteristics, we create highly personalised plans for optimal wellness and healing.

The Functional Medicine Process

Within Functional Medicine, patients are treated as an active partner in improving their health and changing the outcome of disease and infection.

You will work closely with a practitioner to discuss your health goals and evaluate any underlying causes or triggers of dysfunction.

Finding the root causes of health problems

Assessments will consider multiple factors, including:

  • Environment (i.e. diet, food quality, air quality, etc.)
  • Mind-body connections (i.e. the psycho-emotional roots of disease)
  • Genetic make-up (i.e. hereditary conditions, DNA, etc.)

This allows us to understand how key processes in your body are affected, making it easier to identify any disturbances or imbalances. Based on this, we can apply appropriate interventions that substantially improve bodily functions or, in some cases, restore it completely. Sometimes, this can be done even before symptoms show.

Our practitioners can provide tailored counselling on lifestyle, exercise, and stress-management techniques and give recommendations on when to pursue:

By being open to various available interventions, we can customise a treatment plan that effectively changes how the body systems function and produces the most impact for each patient.

Dr Simon Lam graduated from the University of Oxford in 1993 and continued his postgraduate medical training in the United Kingdom. He has been a member of the Royal College of Physician in London since 1996. He developed his interest in brain health and evidence-based medicine as a research fellow at the Walton Centre for Neurology and specialist medial registrar at Oxford University Hospitals.

In 2000, he moved to Hong Kong and worked for the Department of Health and NGO for 6 years where he observed how a common set of factors determined the health of many urban and remote communities. He then entered private general practice promoting lifestyle, nutrition and brain health as sustainable solutions to the modern epidemic of chronic illnesses. He continues to pursue excellence in healthcare, undertake regular sabbaticals at university hospitals and attain post-graduate academic qualifications.

Dr Simon Lam has extensive experience managing chronic medical conditions and sub-optimal health using standards-of-care diagnostics and therapeutics while personalising an integrated action plan for optimal function, wellbeing and healthspan.
